Amtrak Maintenance Facility / King Street Station

Amtrak, Seattle, Washington

Exeltech was responsible for the structural design of a new 70,000 sq. ft. maintenance and repair facility for Amtrak and commuter rail train sets based in the Seattle area. The facility is constructed of structural steel framing with metal panel and masonry cladding, and is supported on steel pipe piles. Special constraints unique to this project included the design of a pile foundation system capable of supporting train locomotives and other types of train cars, and use of special moment resisting frames to reduce seismic loads. Exeltech provided construction support services under an agreement with Amtrak to respond to RFIs and material source approvals. Bid items were classified on a separate punch list for ease in coordination efforts with Federal Transportation Administration.
